Snowstorm Resources and Reminders
Dear Neighbors,
As this major winter storm begins to move through our community, I want to share a few important updates, reminders, and resources to help you and your loved ones stay safe. Several inches of snow are already on the ground, with additional accumulation expected throughout the day, and District agencies are operating around the clock to respond. I am deeply grateful to our emergency responders, transit workers, and other frontline workers who are working 24-hour shifts to keep residents safe and services running. Below you’ll find the latest information on closures, snow removal, parking restrictions, warming centers, and what to expect in the hours and days ahead.
City Services & Closures
- DCPL closures: DC Public Libraries are closed today due to the storm. For more status updates, visit DCPL’s website.
- DCPS closures: Monday is a professional development day for DCPS employees, so all DCPS schools will be closed. A decision about school status for Tuesday will be made on Monday.
- Metro service: Metro Rail can operate a normal schedule in light to moderate snow. In extreme weather, service may be suspended for safety. Metro Bus service may be modified during snow, freezing rain, sleet, or ice. For more information on specific routes and schedules, visit Metro’s website.
- Snow Emergency Routes: Vehicles must be moved off designated snow emergency routes by the effective time or risk ticketing and towing. Maps and route details are available at snow.dc.gov
Snow Response & Plowing
- Snow plowing services: DDOT and DPW are working 24/7, with hundreds of plows deployed across our streets and alleys to keep roads passable. Snow plowing typically begins two hours after snow stops falling, and crews work systematically from main roads to smaller residential streets. Please be patient with snow plowing services as crews are stretched across the entire city and will reach every neighborhood as soon as possible.
- Other DPW services: As snow continues, please keep in mind that other DPW services, including trash collection, recycling, and leaf collection may be interrupted.
- Help neighbors shovel snow: As we continue through the snowy season, one of the biggest needs is helping our seniors make sure their sidewalks are shoveled. If you want to lend a hand, email ward4volunteercorps+subscribe@groups.io.
Other Important Resources
- Cold weather & hypothermia: Dangerous temperatures and wind chills are expected to continue. Check on neighbors — especially seniors, people with health vulnerabilities, and those without easy access to heat. Cold.dc.gov has information on warming centers, emergency alerts, and DC’s shelter hotline.
- Power & travel: Heavy snow and ice can cause outages and hazardous roads. Charge devices, avoid unnecessary travel, and only go out if you must. To request services from Pepco in case of a power outage, call (877) 737-2662.
- Requesting help: Call or text 311 for non-emergency city services, including reporting hazardous conditions like downed branches, blocked drains, and snow-related issues. In life-threatening emergencies, always call 911.
Storms like this underscore the strength of our community and how we show up for one another time and again. Please make sure to check in with those around you — especially folks who live alone or might need extra help clearing snow or getting supplies. And if you know someone whose power is out or who’s struggling in the cold, don’t hesitate to reach out to the shelter hotline or 311 for help.
Together, we’ll get through this and keep Ward 4 and all of DC safe and supported. I’ll continue to share updates as they become available.
Yours in community,
— Janeese
